DRYSTONE

DWR Landscapes Ltd has over 20 years experience working with Drystone and building Walls, Wall-cladding and other structures.

Drystone, sometimes called Drystack or, in Scotland Drystane, is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together.
Drystone walls and structures have been created for thousands of years and if built with patience and care, will look as if they have always been there.
A well made Drystone Wall or Structure will not fall down easily. They are not made with mortar, the strength of them comes from the layering of well placed drystone bricks, closely matching shape and depth throughout.
Typically, the drystone used for a Drystone wall or structure would come from the area the wall was built in as they best suit the landscape surround them.
There are some Drystone walls and structures in Europe which have been dated as far back as 7.000 b.c. A Drystone wall or structure really will stand the test of time, but it also depends on the type of stone used. Limestone or Slate Drystone doesn't last as long as Granite Drystone for example (but thats refering to the difference of hundreds to thousands of years).

Some Cornish hedges are believed by the Guild of Cornish Hedgers to date from 5000 BC (also known as Welsh clawdd), which is a Drystone-clad soil bank topped by turf, scrub, shrubs, flowers or trees and characterised by a strict inward-curved slope.
Drystone can be costly, from the price of the Stone to the timely installation process, but it is truly worth every penny.
DWR Landscapes Ltd can help you decide which would best suit the overall appearance of your project or just a single part of it.
